We are currently seeking an Environmental Technician-Solid Waste to join our Engineering Services team. The Environmental Technician contributes to the effective operation of solid waste facilities through the performance of technical work related to the operation, maintenance and environmental monitoring of the pollution control infrastructure at the Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) facilities. This position supports the Solid Waste department by assisting team members in their duties, as required, to meet service expectations, departmental goals and objectives. Located at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre (CVWMC) in Cumberland, and reporting to the Manager of CSWM Operations, the primary responsibilities of this role include:
Overseeing the environmental monitoring program for groundwater and surface water sampling at all CSWM landfills within the service area located in Cumberland, Campbell River, Gold River, Tahsis, Zeballos, and others;
Maintaining monitoring inspection field notes, collecting and handling water samples;
Maintaining sampling equipment, completing required maintenance and keeping an ongoing inventory of sampling supplies;
Supporting the operation and maintenance of surface water diversion tarping and pumps at the CVWMC;
Liaising with laboratories and environmental consultants, maintaining records of test results and other monitoring data;
Supporting compilation of data relating to the environmental monitoring program for groundwater, surface water, leachate and landfill gas in preparation of annual reports;
Reviewing and updating electronic records of monitoring laboratory data;
Supporting the operating and monitoring of the landfill gas collection systems at the Comox Valley Waste Management Center (CVWMC) and Campbell River Waste Management Center (CRWMC);
Providing oversight of the installation of landfill gas infrastructure by contractors under the direction of the Manager of Wastewater;
Inspecting facilities and surrounding properties for any environmental, possible safety hazards or related problems;
Assisting with surveying of the landfill;
Coordinating with GIS to maintain digital engineering drawing database related to capital projects and facility operation.
Our ideal candidate is:
Knowledgeable in landfill operations, groundwater sampling procedures and solid waste management plans;
Team-oriented with a consultative approach;
Current in British Columbia field sampling requirements and practices, the Environmental Management Act, regulations and water quality guidelines, and local bylaws;
Familiar with landfill gas flares, gas and mechanical monitoring systems;
Experienced working with landfill gas operations and field sampling with over one up to and including two years of relevant experience, preferably in local government;
Familiar with groundwater chemistry and hydrogeology;
Educated in environmental technology, environmental sciences, geology, or engineering with over two up to three years of post-secondary training from a recognized education institution at the diploma level OR a four year degree in a relevant discipline related to the position;
A strong communicator with the ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships and resolve conflict when required;
Able to work independently with minimal supervision when required;
Comfortable operating survey instruments with an understanding of grade control;
Comfortable traveling to multiple locations (including overnight stays as required) and working outdoors, accessing remote sample locations in all-weather conditions.
