Wauconda, IL (population 14,125) located in Lake County, Illinois, approximately 45 miles northwest of Chicago, is seeking qualified candidates interested in serving as its next Director of Public Works.
Wauconda (5.73 square miles) is a community of beautiful neighborhoods, with excellent schools, community services and recreational offerings. The outstanding quality of life in Wauconda is shaped by Bangs Lake, a 306-acre recreational amenity that offers a variety of recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, and boating. The Village is a full-service organization which provides Police, Public Works, Community Development, Financial and Administrative services. The Public Works Director, appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the Board of Trustees, reports to the Village Administrator.
The Public Works Department is divided into four major areas of responsibility: Water, Sewer, Street, Forestry and Wastewater Treatment. The Department is responsible for all management, operation, maintenance and repair of Village infrastructure, facilities and equipment. This includes street maintenance, sidewalks, parkway trees, signs, sanitary and storm sewer systems, water distribution, fire hydrants and wastewater treatment. The department also provides emergency response services such as ice control (salting), snow removal and flood assistance. The Department is staffed by 17 full time employees.
Qualified candidates will be expected to have:
A minimum of ten years experience in a municipal public works organization with five years of progressive and successful leadership in management positions in a public works operation in local government.
A bachelor’s level education from an accredited four year college or university in the fields of civil engineering, public administration or closely related field of study.
Extensive knowledge of and practice of traditional public works services with State of Illinois licenses in water distribution and wastewater operations. Ability to develop, administer and carry out financial requirements of the position, including budgeting and long range financial planning.
A leadership style that uses the qualifications and qualities of available personnel resources to accomplish Department goals; open communication and responsible to follow-up on Department projects and plans.
A strong commitment to excellent customer service; highly collaborative; work cooperatively with elected and appointed officials; have exceptional communications skills and responsiveness to the community.
The Village of Wauconda offers a competitive benefits package. Residency is not required. Starting salary for the position is $128,000 +/- DOQ.
