The School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver campus, in collaboration with theInternational Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD) research centre, invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with tenure.
The School of Biomedical Engineering is a partnership between the Faculties of Medicine and Applied Science, acting as a nucleus for education and training, research, and innovation in biomedical engineering, creating new knowledge, new academic and training programs, and fostering translation and innovation. Its vision is to transform health care outcomes through unconstrained exploration of the best possible integrative solutions across engineering, medicine, and biology. Through collaborative, innovative, and interdisciplinary approach and building on UBC academic and research excellence, the School of Biomedical Engineering is emerging as a global leader in biomedical engineering research, education and translation. The primary laboratory space for the successful applicant will be in ICORD (www.icord.org), an interdisciplinary research centre with 45 principal investigators. ICORD has its home in a 10,000 square meter state-of-the art research facility on the Vancouver General Hospital campus.
Reporting to the Director of the School of Biomedical Engineering, the successful candidate will lead an independent research program, participate in graduate and undergraduate teaching in biomedical engineering and related topics, participate in leadership roles in the school and provide service and leadership within the School of Biomedical Engineering, the University and to the broader community. The candidate will be an established leader in the design and use of biomaterials to advance novel fundamental or therapeutic and diagnostic applications in medicine and biology. Specific example areas include the design of materials for immunomodulation, novel delivery systems, “smart” materials for programmed biological engineering, soft materials for bio-inspired and bio-integrated technologies or related areas. Outstanding candidates in all areas related to biomaterials will be considered. An entreperunial or clinical translation mindset will be an asset.
Synergies with strengths in the School of Biomedical Engineering and its ecosystem are anticipated. Proposal of an innovative research program of high quality, a collaborative team-based approach and ability to attract, develop and retain excellent trainees, students and future researchers are important characteristics of desirable candidates. The successful candidate must be able to establish and maintain high-quality, productive relationships across cultural differences and work in a collaborative and inclusive manner, fostering equitable experiences and a respectful environment for all staff, faculty, and students.
Applicants will hold a Ph.D. or equivalent and will have a strong background in bioengineering, biomedical engineering, materials engineering or mechanical engineering and/or related fields and have extensive experience and training related to biomaterials. Experience and interest in immunology in the context of biomaterials are also especially desired.
If appointed at the rank of Associate Professor, the successful candidate will have demonstratedevidence of successful teaching and ability to direct graduate students, evidence of sustained and productive scholarly activity with a reputation well beyond their institution and preferably a national recognition, and must be willing to participate in the affairs of the Department and the University. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviors.
If appointed at the rank of Professor, the successful candidate will have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and a demonstrated track record in both creating and sustaining an independent research program with international recognition, as well as being an effective and accomplished educator. The successful candidate must be able to establish and maintain high-quality, productive relationships across cultural differences and work in a collaborative and inclusive manner, fostering equitable experiences and a respectful environment for all staff, faculty, and students. The successful candidate will have demonstrated evidence of ability to excel in teaching and will be expected to provide service to the University and the broader academic and professional community.
