The City of Ames is conducting a recruitment to establish a Civil Service eligibility list for this classification. The list will be valid for up to one year from the date of certification by the Ames Civil Service Commission and may be used to fill one or more vacancies in this classification. In addition, City of Ames Civil Service employees who have previously held Civil Service status in this classification and are interested in voluntarily demoting or laterally transferring into the current vacancy must submit their application by the deadline.
Manages work related to the maintenance and reliability of City of Ames power generating facilities. Supervises power plant maintenance foremen, staff and contractors that perform maintenance, repairs, and upgrades to all systems and equipment within the facilities; uses proven work processes and predictive, preventive and proactive maintenance work activities and tasks to enhance the availability and reliability of the plant equipment. Performs related work as required.
Under the general direction of the Power Plant Manager, this position is responsible for creating and maintaining a positive work culture with a dedication to safety and is accountable to monitor and maintain plant processes and equipment necessary to deliver stable and reliable plant operations. This position is responsible for leading, training, developing, and managing the deployment of all maintenance employees. Manages the Power Plant's maintenance and reliability programs in accordance with up-to-date, proven, and sound industry practices. Develops and executes strategies that achieve safety standards, ensure high equipment availability, and meet financial targets for maintenance impacted costs while considering operational requirements, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship. Engages in day to day troubleshooting and failure mitigation, managing response plans to maximize equipment availability.
Manages the risk assessment processes to identify the repair and overhaul requirements of the steam generating, combustion turbine, power production, and auxiliary equipment. Manages all proactive, predictive, and preventive maintenance work activities such as overhaul reports, oil and coolant analyses, equipment performance and vibration test results, remote condition monitoring system, thermography, ultrasonic testing, borescopic inspections and vibration testing. Provides operational and maintenance recommendations and action plans based on such activities and data. Collects and interprets data to drive Root Cause Failure Analyses (RCFA) and Failure Mode Analyses. Diligently manages equipment documentation system, fully utilizing the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track plant assets and to coordinate work.
Manages maintenance and repair work involving valves, steam and water piping, air and vacuum piping, pumps, coal burning equipment, chemical handling equipment, boilers, steam turbines, generators, combustion turbines, and the refuse derived fuel (RDF) handling system; reads and interprets blueprints and technical drawings; schedules preventative maintenance for all equipment; instructs others in the use of tools including electric and gas welding equipment, machine tools, pipe cutters, drills, taps and dies, precision tooling and measuring instruments, rigging and hoisting equipment, and other equipment used in the maintenance of the power plant.
Assists in administration of the safety program for plant employees. Responsible for the development of the annual power plant maintenance budget; provides input regarding the operations budget and the 5-year capital improvement plan (CIP). Develops maintenance procedures for safe and efficient equipment maintenance. Performs annual evaluations for assigned personnel.
Engages and consults with equipment manufacturers, service providers, vendors, and industry professional organizations to stay current with maintenance technology and best practices. Schedules and coordinates plant maintenance outages and major overhauls. Purchases and oversees employee purchasing of equipment parts, tools, and equipment. Reviews and approves invoicing of parts, equipment, and labor performed by contractors and suppliers. Assists in the development of contracts for plant maintenance and construction, and master agreements for maintenance related services.

The median of any merit salary range is for an employee who can reasonably meet all expectations of the position responsibilities without initial extensive training. In order for employees to have an opportunity to grow within their position, we may consider a candidate's education, experience, and skills above the minimum requirements when looking at a salary closer to or slightly above the median. The median for this position is $49.09 per hour.
