The Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University invites applications for a Professor of the Practice (PoP). Candidates should demonstrate an interest in enhancing the experiences of our undergraduate and graduate students. Our program covers disciplines such as electronics, signals and systems, anatomy, quantitative physiology, biomechanics, biotransport, biomaterials, tissue engineering, design thinking, and innovation. We seek a team-player with expertise in at least one of these disciplines and the desire and initiative to lead our department’s growth through excellence in teaching, pedagogical development, student mentorship, field-related professional activity, and service. PoP faculty are encouraged to engage in, or lead, training grants and supervise student projects.?

The Department of Biomedical Engineering, founded in 1977, has a an ABET accredited undergraduate program with approximately 200 undergraduate majors and 50 graduate students. Biomedical Engineering is located in the School of Science and Engineering on Tulane’s uptown campus. Our academic structure is beneficial to the Department of Biomedical Engineering because of the strong emphasis on interdisciplinary interactions and an administrative structure that reduces the overhead associated with these interactions. The department also administers an interdisciplinary Bioinnovation PhD program that is supported by an NIH T32 training grant.

The department’s research and teaching presence on Tulane’s uptown campus benefits from a unique cadaveric anatomy lab, dedicated design spaces, and an interdisciplinary MakerSpace. Furthermore, faculty and undergraduate students conduct mentored research in substantial BME-led laboratory space on the downtown Health Science campus. Our combined environment fosters collaborative interactions with the School of Medicine, School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, the Southeast Louisiana VA Medical Center, Innovation Ochsner and the New Orleans Bioinnovation Center.
