Tacoma Power's Utility Technology Services (UTS) section is seeking a Data Architect with broad and deep experience implementing enterprise data warehouses, data pipelines, dimensional models, and ETL/ELT solutions using modern data architecture patterns, especially around data lakes, data pipelines, and cloud-based data warehouses. The right candidate will be a collaborative team player with an excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to customer service. This is an exciting time to join our team as UTS is building a new data engineering practice for Tacoma Public Utilities (TPU). As a Data Architect, you will design and deliver innovative data solutions on Amazon Web Services, Databricks, and Snowflake. You will play a critical role in defining our cloud data strategy, designing dimensional models, and translating utility business requirements into long-term data architecture solutions, including logical and physical models. Responsibilities include: - Serve as TPU's lead data designer, defining data standards for ETL/ELT data modeling, data quality, metadata management, data organization, data storage, and data movement.
- Collaborate with business users to translate requirements into data design and solutions, especially dimensional models.
- Provide data design recommendations on complex, high-impact integration technology projects.
- Lead TPU's enterprise data architecture efforts and facilitate the definition of TPU's reference data architecture.
- Develop enterprise-level expertise in business intelligence, data warehousing and big data across TPU.
- Review and approve data designs for compliance with best practice guidelines and standards for data, metadata, data modeling, and management.
- Manage and monitor contractor work and performance and ensure technical deliverables are completed on-time and according to quality expectations.
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in Information Technology/Computer Science or related field, Master's degree preferred;
- 2+ years of experience as a Data Architect or senior-level Data Engineer or 5+ years of experience as a Data Applications Developer/Engineer or Database Administrator;
- Experience with the AWS big data ecosystem, including S3, EMR, Athena, Glue and Redshift desired;
- Experience with Databricks and/or Apache Spark desired;
- Experience with big data technologies, including HDFS, MapReduce, Hive, HBase and Kafka desired;
- Experience with cloud data warehouse technologies, such as Redshift, Snowflake or Azure Data Warehouse desired.
Required Knowledge: - Expert-level knowledge of data architecture principles, approaches, best practices and emerging technologies.
- Skill in customer service and working with a variety of people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Knowledge of implementing data-centric applications, such as data lakes, data warehouses, and data pipelines.
- Knowledge of big data technologies, such as NoSQL, distributed file systems and data lake design patterns.
- Knowledge of cloud-based big data ecosystems, such as Amazon Web Services, Snowflake and Azure.
- Knowledge of data ingestion design patterns, including streaming analytics, complex event processing and micro-services.
- Knowledge of master data management best practices and the ability to lead in their implementation and maintenance.
- Knowledge to produce conceptual, logical and physical data models.
- Knowledge of data governance processes and structures.
- Knowledge of application, data development and data discovery methodologies.
- Knowledge of metadata management-maintenance as well as design and implementation of metadata-driven enterprise solutions.
- Knowledge of data classification, business ownership/stewardship definition and developing role-based data access.
- Advanced knowledge of relational databases.
- Knowledge of ETL (extract, transform, load) methodologies and tools.
- Knowledge of data privacy, compliance and security principles.
- Skill in analysis, problem solving and troubleshooting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
