About Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering UNC-NCSU
The mission of the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is to unite engineering and medicine to improve lives. With 35 primary teaching and research faculty members and more than 500 undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral students, the Joint Department is on track to realize its ambitious vision of becoming a leader in real-world results: faculty productivity, student accomplishment, and entrepreneurial success.
BME students have access to the vast resources of these world-class public universities, which includes greater opportunities for collaboration with faculty, clinicians, and students in top-ranked schools of pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, veterinary medicine, and textiles.
The undergraduate program at NC State is accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) and offers a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. At UNC-Chapel Hill, the Joint Department offers a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical and Health Sciences Engineering and is currently under ABET review for accreditation.
Along with the traditional areas of biomedical engineering, Master’s and doctoral students have the opportunity to select from five specialty areas:
Biomed...ical Microdevices
Medical Imaging
Pharmacoengineering
Rehabilitation Engineering
Regenerative Medicine
The Joint Department capitalizes on its transformative inter-institutional model by translating discoveries from the academic laboratory setting to the commercial marketplace. BME faculty and students have started 31 companies — and filed 138 patents and 366 invention disclosures.
