THE POSITION Performs engineering services on traffic and transportation related issues within the City; performs directly related work as required.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL WORK (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY)
Plans, coordinates and performs functions related to traffic engineering, transportation planning, traffic field operations and investigations;
Oversees and performs various traffic engineering duties, including traffic signals; signing, pavement marking and street lighting layouts; special events planning, site plan reviews, skywalk sign modifications, parking garage improvements, approval of utility right-of-way usage, and related;
Performs traffic signal design, including plans, specifications and approvals;
Coordinates and oversees supervisory staff in daily traffic operations including traffic signal installation, maintenance and repair, sign installation, fabrication, maintenance and repair and pavement markings installation;
Serves as project engineer on traffic signal work, including inspections;
Oversees and conducts traffic studies and field investigations based upon staff or citizen requests and prepares reports, correspondence and communications with numerous parties, including the City Manager, Traffic Safety Committee, other departments and the public;
Conducts project development, implementation and analysis;
Supervises pavement marking program;
Prepares draft Roll Calls, Council Information Letters, fact sheets and maps for City Council meetings;
Serves as staff member to the Traffic Safety Committee;
Develops signs and other devices for special events;
Provide in-house cross-training and act as a resource for information to employees in the same or similar position;
Coordinates and tracks submittal between the engineering department and governmental agencies;
Resolves construction conflicts and technical issues;
Analyzes reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, tests and other information to plan, design and build projects;
Reviews procedures to assure state, federal and local requirements are met;
Reviews consultant plans, specifications, and estimates, departmental design plans, traffic signal and roadway geometric layout for private developers;
Coordinates with contractors, consulting engineers, surveyors, inspectors, utility representatives and other officials to gather and disseminate information and maintain records necessary to satisfy public improvement requirements;
Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering; AND
Considerable e experience in traffic signal design and inspection, or as a project engineer for traffic analysis; OR
Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Valid Iowa driver's license;
Iowa Certification as a Licensed Professional Engineer.
