The Department of Civil Engineering at Sacramento State invites applications for a tenure track appointment in the general area of structural engineering. The department offers BS and MS degrees in civil engineering with 14 full-time faculty members who serve approximately 800 undergraduate majors and 100 graduate students. Duties will include: (1) effectively teaching courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, (2) develop and engage in scholarly activities, including research and externally-funded projects, (3) advise students, developing curriculum, and other instructional-related duties, (4) develop and supervise Master’s student research, (5) work cooperatively with a diverse student population and with faculty colleagues on department, college and University-wide committees, and (6) providing service to the institution and community. Teaching responsibilities will include structural engineering courses and other supporting courses in the B.S. and M.S. Civil Engineering degree programs.
Required qualifications include:
A doctorate in civil engineering or related field with an emphasis in structural engineering. ABD candidates will be considered. If ABD, candidates will be required to complete the doctorate by August 2018.
Professional registration as a Civil Engineer in California or the ability to become registered within four (4) years of appointment is required.
Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certificate by the appointment date.
Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups.
Effective communication skills.
Ability to apply quality teaching approaches.
Ability to relate engineering fundamentals to structural design.
Ability to develop curriculum that contextualizes classroom learning to prepare students for engineering practice.
Ability to engage in scholarship with undergraduate and MS-level students.
Preference will be given to candidates with –
University-level teaching experience in civil engineering.
Ability to demonstrate specialization in structural engineering that complement the teaching and research strengths of the Civil Engineering Department.
Professional practice experience in structural engineering.
BS and MS degree in civil engineering.
This is a full-time tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank beginning with the Fall 2018 semester. Starting salary will be dependent upon qualifications and professional experience as well as educational preparation, university-level teaching experience, and record of scholarship.
