The County of San Mateo’s Planning and Building Department is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer (Associate Civil Engineer) to join our skilled and dedicated team.
The Associate Civil Engineer is the registered journey-level classification in the engineering series. Under general supervision, incumbents perform a variety of professional engineering services, including various reviews of geotechnical, geologic and soil reports, as well as grading and drainage plans. Associate Civil Engineers may provide lead direction to other staff and vendors in completing projects of greater difficulty and complexity. Incumbents may be required to perform field work in support of design or construction projects.
The ideal candidate for this position is:
Technically knowledgeable and experienced in principles of geotechnical engineering practices in San Mateo County, including, but not limited to identification and assessment of geological hazards, engineering mathematics, geotechnical engineering analyses, slope stability, foundation design criteria and settlement
Technically knowledgeable and experienced in geotechnical engineering laboratory testing procedures and interpretation
An effective communicator, both orally and in writing, with the ability to represent the County in meetings and presentations to various groups, including community groups, regulatory and other governmental agencies and the general public
Customer-focused and effective in communicating with staff, engineers, contractors and the public, and in coordinating with law enforcement agencies, emergency responders and other agencies when necessary
Able to analyze and evaluate geotechnical, soil, drainage and engineering reports, plans, specifications and alternatives; make sound recommendations; and prepare effective technical staff reports
Capable of determining the need for, and the type and required content of, technical studies that should accompany building and planning permit applications, including, but not limited to soils, geotechnical, drainage and engineering studies, as well as providing clear and consistent guidance to planners and applicants in this regard
Accountable, with the ability to schedule and follow through with assignments independently
Qualifications include possession of a valid Certificate of Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California at the time of hire and a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering OR Engineer in Training Certificate, plus two years of professional civil engineering experience which has included field and office work in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of a variety of civil engineering projects. Experience in public works projects is ideal. Some positions require possession of a Class C California driver’s license or equivalent.
