To plan, coordinate, supervise and participate in a major section within a Public Works division including development review, traffic engineering, and/or the assessment, planning, design, construction, and maintenance/operation of a variety of public works facilities, systems, projects and/or private development projects and programs; and to provide professional and technical engineering support relative to assigned area of responsibility.
The City is seeking to fill two positions in the Public Works Department; one will serve in the Transportation Division, reporting to the Transportation Manager, and be responsible for managing the Traffic Engineering Program and other assigned transportation responsibilities, the other will serve in the Engineering Division, reporting to the City Engineer, and support development engineering and capital project delivery programs.
The Transportation Division position currently is envisioned to supervise a staff of up eight including, electricians, engineering assistants and part-time employees. The ideal candidate to fill the position in the Transportation Division will possess specialized experience in traffic engineering, including knowledge of traffic modelling, the California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, traffic calming techniques, bicycle infrastructure design, complete street and alternative transportation principles, signal timing/phasing analysis, and have strong written and verbal skills to be able to professionally engage the public, professionals, commissioners and elected officials. In addition, a Traffic Engineering license is desirable and a supplemental questionnaire requesting detailed work history is included.
The Engineering Division position may take on supervisorial responsibilities over 3-4 technical engineering staff depending on the candidate qualifications. The ideal candidate to fill the position in the Engineering Division will possess a broad range of education and experience related to the review and analysis of land development projects, the Subdivision Map Act, encroachment permit activities, and general civil engineering design and construction principles.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience: Four years of increasingly responsible experience in civil engineering including two years of lead responsibility.
Training: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil or environmental engineering or a related field.
License or Certificate Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer issued by the State of California.
Additional registration within the field appropriate for the job assignment; as an example, Professional Traffic Engineer, Professional Land Surveyor, Professional Structural Engineer is desirable.
Possession of an appropriate California driver's license.
