At ODOT Region 1 HQ, located in downtown Portland, we are recruiting for an expert roadway designer for our project design team. The person in this position will: * Prepare Roadway design products that could include preliminary engineering as well as final design. * Act as project design consultant. * Mentor other designers and staff in developmental positions. * Act as engineer of record for projects of any complexity including highly complex projects. Region 1 provides builds, operates, and maintains the multi-modal transportation system serving the Portland metropolitan area. The Region 1 Technical Center creates plans, specifications, and estimates for an annual in-house project-delivery construction volume of approximately $40 million.

Duties & Responsibilities: * Independently design roadway plans and estimates, including new construction and reconstruction of: * Multi-lane freeways. * Primary highways. * City streets and county roads.
* Serve as the engineer of record for projects of any complexity. * Review field location data and preliminary designs to confirm compliance with state and federal design standards. * Consult with and coordinate plans design activities. * Prepare and analyze design alternatives for complex multi-modal STIP projects. * Provide design and review of plans for consultant prepared, local agency or private development prepared projects. * Work with CADD technicians to prepare 3D designs and construction handoff packages. * Perform site visits. * Plan, assign, direct, and review the work of other designers. * Prepare design exceptions. * Train other designers. * Provide estimates for staff resource effort/hours required for project design. * Assume the responsibilities of the lead senior designer when absent. * Interact with both internal and external stakeholders, including coworkers, contractors, consultants, and both public and government groups
JOB REQUIREMENTS: Qualifications, Required & Requested Skills: Minimum Qualifications: A valid professional engineer's (PE) license in civil, structural, or transportation-related engineering.
Note: If registered in another state, successful applicants will be required to obtain comity within six months of hire.
Special Qualifications: Driving is an essential function of this position. A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record are required for this position. We will conduct pre-employment driving records checks on our final candidate(s).
Preferred Attributes: We may show preference to candidates whose application materials demonstrate the following:* Experience in roadway project engineering on public infrastructure projects. * Excellent written and verbal communications skills. * Experience in construction engineering. * Working knowledge of InRoads and microstation.
Working Conditions: * Requires both office and outdoor work. * Heavy workload requiring properly preparing plans and estimates under tight deadlines. * Team oriented environment requiring the use of collaborative processes in a team setting to resolve complex and at times, emotionally charged issues. * Extensive use of personal computer requiring typing, data entry, and report retrieval. * At project sites – may need to walk on rough terrain, climb in steep or hazardous locations and stoop or bend around structures or equipment, and may be required to work 20 feet or more above ground/water.
